Pancake day.

As you can see, it was Pancake Day on Tuesday (or Shrove Tuesday if you want to be posh). It was yum.... but I made Gemma and Amy make them because I always mess them up every year ha.

I like them with savoury things like bacon and ham best cause I was always brought up that way with Scandinavian influence... but I guess lemon and sugar is good too!

Fairytale.

This is my favourite song that is being entered into the Eurovision song contest so far this year. Its Norway's entry and its just amazing. It certainly has my vote - I hope it wins (other than us obviously ha).

But then anyone that plays the violin gets my vote :D

Its that time of year again...

I haven't spoken about this yet on here but those that know me well will know that I LOVE the Eurovision song contest. For those non-europeans that don't know what it is, its one of the most widely watched events in the world but its probably easier if you just wikipedia it: click (see, I'm so helpful).

The United Kingdom always used to do really well every year but since 2002, we have come last twice and struggled to rise up out of the top 16 on the other occasions. People have blamed political voting (which I accept to some degree but political voting existed BEFORE we did badly). If it was all political voting with neighbouring countries voting for each other, crappy songs would occasionally win and in my opinion, the best song usually does win .... except maybe last year, sorry Russia... oh and when Sweden was beaten by Finland but I'll let that slide... or when Russia entered T.A.T.U with a crap song yet it did well because they were T.A.T.U .. k, I'll stop now.

The reason the UK has done SO badly since 2002 is because every year, we have sent AWFUL songs. It is kind of embarrassing when we are one of the biggest exporters of amazing music in the world yet when it comes to the Eurovision song contest and representing our country in front of Europe, we send Scooch dressed as air hostesses or Daz Sampson prancing around with school girls. Thats why we don't do well. It works for Latvia - not us.

I'm not saying this is all bad because it is extremely entertaining seeing Scooch poke fun at a silly contest which the rest of Europe takes so seriously but I do think we need a break from it and I'm glad we are taking it seriously this year, just to see what happens.

Andrew Lloyd Webber has written the song for us this year and the girl singing it (Jade Ewan) is an amazing singer. Its a good old fashioned power ballad that sounds like it has just jumped out of a Disney film. Admittedly, it would be boring if it wasn't for the fantastic end key-change though! Even people that don't like it admit that it is our best entry for years so if we don't come top 10 with it in May, then we atleast know that the contest really is a joke and we can then carry on sending novelty acts ... just so that we can have a bit of a laugh.

It is getting a good reception from the rest of Europe too judging by youtube/forum comments and the BBC are actually bothering to promote it this year. Jade has already performed it at the Greek and Maltese song selection finals and she sounded fantastic.

So yeah, I'm going to find it interesting to see how it all goes because so far, none of the countries' selections have really grabbed me. Even Sweden's Melodifestivalen seems a bit dull this year compared to others but then I don't blame them seeing as how they have done quite badly with some amazing songs over the last few years and they probably put the most effort into the contest out of everyone. Our house is always split between UK and Sweden when the Eurovision is on ... for obvious reasons! Heja Sverige!!

Comment and let me know if you are European and read this, it'd be awesome to see what you think about the songs this year!

Brain Fart.

Yay for stream of consciousness!

I haven't been to sleep, I can do without group work this morning.

Its such a nice day though, I really fancy a trip to the tearoom up the hill.

I need to get my online life sorted out - maybe even make a video later.

I so prefer tea in the mornings but coffee is definitely necessary right now.

I have no idea why Belinda Carlisle is playing right now.

Yet I love that Coldplay won nothing at the Brit awards last night.

I really like the UK's Eurovision song contest entry this year and shockingly so does the rest of Europe - maybe we will do well for once?

I need to buy a new copy of 'Catcher in the rye' later, I've lost mine.

'Freddy vs Jason' had better come today. I don't like the film but I won't rest until my Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th collections are complete.

The first sign of sun this winter is giving me the urge to go riding :(

Warm bathrooms first thing in the morning are amazing.

I should probably stop spamming the blogosphere with random crap and get ready for uni....

Happy day of commercialism!

I loathe Valentine's day with every inch of my body.

It infuriates me that we, as people, need the excuse of a certain commercialized day in order to show our love for someone. Should that not be done every day of the year?

Seeing the dozens of men in Tesco at midnight last night hovering around the Valentine's day cards because they had obviously forgotten or left it to the last minute, proves just how little thought goes in to such a fake occasion anyway.

Oh and before anyone says, no I'm not jealous ha. Even when I have been in relationships, I have always hated the day equally ... maybe even slightly more. I don't like the idea of society dictating to me when I should be displaying my emotions just so that Clinton's cards can reap in the profit.

Yet if you are in a relationship, you ignore the day at your peril. I guess there is no easy way out so maybe I should just learn to live with it or find someone that shares my hate for it. Any takers? :)

1984.

So I'm reading '1984' by George Orwell (I recommend everyone else does the same) and I came across this passage which really grabbed my attention:
"In reality very little was known about the proles. It was not necessary to know much. So long as they continued to work and breed, their other activities were without importance. Left to themselves, like cattle turned loose upon the plains of Argentina, they had reverted to a style of life that appeared natural to them, a sort of ancestral pattern. They were born, they grew up in the gutters, they went to work at twelve, they passed through a brief blossoming-period of beauty and sexual desire, they married at twenty, they were middle-aged at thirty, they died, for the most part, at sixty. Heavy physical work, the care of home and children, petty quarrels with neighbours, films, football, beer and, above all, gambling, filled up the horizon of their minds. To keep them in control was not difficult. A few agents of the Thought Police moved always among them, spreading false rumours and marking down and eliminating the few who were judged capable of becoming dangerous; but no attempt was made to indoctrinate them with the ideology of the Party. It was not desirable that the proles should have strong political feelings. All that was required of them was a primitive patriotism which could be appealed to whenever it was necessary to make them accept longer working-hours or shorter rations. And even when they became discontented, as they sometimes did, their discontent led nowhere, because, being without general ideas, they could only focus it on petty specific grievances. the larger evils invariably escaped their notice."
The proles themselves are the lowest class in society within the novel which is set in the future and are basically classed as dirty untouchables who are oblivious as to what is going on politically. They are pretty mush sheep that do nothing to overthrow the Totalitarian society even though if they wanted to, they could. I find it quite chilling that it basically describes us, the general public, as we are now. Yes, it describes a very 1940's general public (as that is when it was written) but it still describes us nonetheless. Looking at the world today and relating it to that passage, it scares me that someone could have written it almost sixty years ago. It just makes me think, are we really that oblivious and naive?

The answer obviously, is yes.

Getting to know you.

Okay, so I get lots of questions via youtube and email from people just wanting to know a bit more about me. I've never really thought before about how you don't really learn that much from people's videos (not about them anyway). I mean, Michael Buckley is a hugely recognisable figure online yet I have no idea about where he is currently in his life or anything about his background. So I thought I'd make this post providing a few personal facts in the hope that people will actually see me as more of a person and not just a robotic Youtube 'vlogger'.
  • I'm Wayne and I'm 19 (20 on the 21st of March).
  • I was named after the cowboy actor John Wayne because my Dad is obsessed with him.
  • My full name could not get anymore American .. unless maybe I was called Brad.
  • My hometown is a little town in Fenland, Cambridgeshire which is an extremely rural area in the East of England.
  • I have Geordie (from Newcastle) blood so I'm clearly a hard-nut :p *jokes*
  • There is just myself and my Dad at home as my siblings have moved out.
  • I am currently living in Lincolnshire as I am studying at the University of Lincoln.
  • I study journalism.
  • I was always the best at English throughout school and I always loved and studied science - yet I did a major u-turn to chose journalism. This is something I sometimes regret.
  • One of the reasons why I chose it is because when he was a boy, my Dad was on a famous BBC TV show called 'Crackerjack' yet the BBC won't release the footage to the public. One of my ambitions is to become a journalist so that I can get access to it :)
  • I was the deputy head boy of my school (yes, that does exist outside of Harry Potter).
  • Reading is my obsession. However, I rarely read modern books. I love the old classics, including the ancient Greek and Roman novels. Sometimes find myself living my life by them.
  • I vote conservative (Our country needs them right now).
  • I tend to get a long with girls better than boys - especially intellectual girls.
  • People always think I'm older than I am.
  • Yet I'm extremely immature and it shocks most people to find out that my mind is pretty much in the gutter :)
  • I have to be extremely comfortable with people before I can be my REAL self. As a result, some people think I'm ignorant and stuck-up on first impressions. I'm really not! .. much ;)
  • I haven't cried since I was 10 when my dog died. That part in Garden State where Zach Braff talks about not being able to cry at his own mother's funeral upsets me because those words relate to me 100%.
  • I'm one of the most argumentative people ever and have learnt to tone it down a lot since being at uni and living in a house with others. I still find it hard to bite my lip sometimes though.
  • I love to write. I write everything, literally. I keep a written journal which I update every couple of days. It makes me happy to see words written down and knowing that my life is physically recorded.
  • My concentration span is non-existent. I can sit and read a book for hours yet I can't sit through a film and only go to the cinema if I have to. These rules don't apply to horror.
  • I am a total horror film fanatic. They are the only films I can watch (bar a few good others) but I have this thing where, once I've seen a horror film, I HAVE to buy it on DVD. As a result, my collection is huge and my housemates call me Blockbuster.
  • Having said this, my favourite film is actually Titanic ;)
  • My music taste really is eclectic. I listen to EVERYTHING except reggae and most rap. I love country and I wish it was bigger here *thankgoodnessfortheinternet*
  • My favourite artists are: Seth Lakeman, Joshua Radin, Jason Mraz, Delta Goodrem, Taylor Swift, The Weepies and Britney (ha).
  • Contrary to popular belief, my youtube channel started as a joke and it escalated. I have a love/hate relationship with it though.
  • My whole life, I have said that I am going to leave the country when I graduate and I still want this to happen. I'm going to do something in public service after journalism so that I can get a visa and then I'm gone. I definitely want to come back though.
  • I love my country but the people frustrate me. The British are pushovers, negative, pessimistic and ignorant. They do have good points too :p I just want to experience somewhere that is slightly more uplifting... with better weather.
  • I have diagnosed insomnia which I've inherited from my Dad and Nan (how nice of them). As a result I'm usually up most of the night and snappy in the day .. which my housemates love of course. Its easier at home because Dad is usually up too.
  • Horse riding, show jumping and generally anything horse related makes me happy. My heroes are all in this field - William Fox-Pitt, Pippa Funnell, Zara Phillips etc etc.
  • My dad races greyhounds and I love dogs so much. When I'm living on my own I want 2 huskies or maybe even a greyhound.
  • I hate cats. Alot.
  • I often think about dropping out of uni yet I've never quit anything in my life and I'm not about to start now.
Woah, I dare you to try that. You could literally go on forever. If there is something you want to know that I haven't mentioned, ask me in the comments - I might answer ;) haha. Oh and drop me a comment anyway so I can see exactly who reads this thing regularly. You can be my blog family <3

50 things I remember about primary school.

I saw this on Clare Grant's blog and it brought back memories so I decided to give it a go. 50 things that I remember/remind me of Primary school.
  1. The fact that my school was situated in front of the nature reserve on the street in which I lived so I could roll out of bed at 8:30 on those grey, dismal mornings and still get to school on time.
  2. Hanging our coats in the cloakroom on pegs with our names on and placing our lunchboxes on the shelves above.
  3. We had our own personal trays with our names on and if they ever got full, we would swap space in our friend's trays for sweets.
  4. Having Mr Mantom read bible stories to us every morning from a lectern in assembly.
  5. The local vicar, Rev Collins would visit every Friday and have the whole school giggling with his silly renditions of Jonah and the whale.
  6. How our school never taught conventional sports in P.E. If, on the rare occasion the weather was nice, we would be allowed outside to play a made-up game called Long ball. Otherwise, we would have to stay in the hall and learn maypole dancing, ready for the town's May festival.
  7. Winding up the dinnerladies at lunch times and finding out they were usually one of the pupil's mothers.
  8. Never having anything you wanted to eat in your lunchbox.
  9. Being told off for constantly talking or trying to be too 'smart' for my own good.
  10. Having to make some kind of craft in school time which you would then have to buy back at the school fete ... cheapskates.
  11. Running in and out of the conifer trees at breaktime even though we weren't meant to and end up getting covered in a red rash.
  12. Taking part in the total joke that was cycling proficiency. You literally had to cycle around the playground twice and up the road and then you were considered a pro on a bike. Do they still teach that?
  13. Watching those awful 'Look and read' films in the AV room each week. I remember 'Badger girl', 'Geordie Racer' and 'Spywatch'.
  14. How my school's AV room doubled as everything else. It was a music room, a TV room and a mini assembly room.
  15. No-one knowing what the hell AV even stood for until year 6.
  16. Being sent to the library meant a whole hour's worth of messing around in the corridor pretending to find a book.
  17. The colour-coded reading books that you had to work through and everyone raced to get on to purple first. 'The magic key' series with Biff, Chip and Kipper were always a favourite.
  18. Heinemann maths books where people would give up and just look in the answer books.
  19. How being sent to the Headmaster's office seemed the worst thing in the world.
  20. The medical room which smelt like a dentist, was the size of a small wardrobe and was filled with a sink and dozens of sick buckets.
  21. Teachers always smelt of coffee.
  22. My school was so small that the same people had the leads in plays every single year.
  23. The nativity that always went wrong.
  24. School dinners on those horrible green trays filled with lumpy custard and soggy hash browns.
  25. Plimsoles in P.E :/
  26. The first computer I ever used was in year 4 and it was one of those ancient Acorn ones that had 'Pod goes pop' on it.
  27. Doing 'Don't wanna let you go' with two other friends by Five in Turns assembly where anyone could enter and do a song/dance/poem etc etc.... how embarrassing.
  28. The school trip EVERY year was to the Butterfly Park or Stagholt farm.
  29. Having to endure trips to medieval reenactment centres like Buckden Towers whilst dressed as a Tudor.
  30. Accidentally flicking a ruler at a supply teacher in year 3 and feeling sick for weeks that I would get found out.
  31. Being forced to write with fountain pens in the junior years and having them leak everywhere.
  32. How teachers made a huge deal for months about studying for the year 6 SATS when in reality, they meant nothing.
  33. Kiss chase at the in-school discos.
  34. Having our school discos held in a sketchy little hall INSIDE the nature reserve and sliding across the dance floor pretending we were planes.
  35. When the deputy head would dress as Father Christmas each year at the Christmas fete.
  36. Trying to do long jump in a pit full of cat wee/poo.
  37. SPORTS DAY. What a joke. Its called sports day, yet no sports are actually played. Everyone competes in a delightful series of events ranging from an egg and spoon race, bean bag race, skipping race, ball in bucket to hoop-la. And people wonder why the British suck when it comes to sports?
  38. The awful green and yellow school uniform.
  39. Playing stuck in the mud and British bulldog EVERY playtime.... until they banned British Bulldog.
  40. People falling and grazing their knees was the biggest playground event.
  41. Waiting in anticipation for the dinner ladies to check the grass and if it was (on the rare occasion) dry, we would be allowed on it.
  42. Wet play times (which were often), sitting inside and playing with multi-link and k-nex.
  43. Painting pointless pictures in the wet-area.
  44. Story time - where no-one listened and just fiddled with their bags.
  45. Overhead-projector duty was the most power anyone could be given.
  46. Singing the same hymns every morning for the entire 7 years: jubilate, love is like a magic penny, the lord is my shepherd, cross over the road, autumn days and jesus emmanuel.
  47. Saying grace every dinner time "Here I sit upon my chair, fold my arms and say my prayer, hear me jesus what I say - thankyou for my food today, amen". Lol.
  48. Having to listen to classical music every morning in and out of assembly.
  49. Feeling so important when on 'door holding' duty.
  50. Feeling so grown-up when putting on the leavers' assembly :(

Feeling & Film.

I like to think of myself as a pretty positive person but I've been feeling kind of down lately due to a few things going on in my life. I can't pinpoint one thing and say that is the problem, its a culmination and I think that is the reason why it has gotten to me so much. You've probably noticed that I'm a pretty introverted person too so it doesn't help that I can't stand telling people about what I'm thinking/feeling. I always get by though somehow - life has a way of working itself out and I fully trust that concept.

When I'm down, I just sleep ... a lot .... and stare at the tv/computer all day. Usually I HATE watching films (unless they are horror and then I'm obsessed) because I have such a poor attention span and I can't sit still for long enough but over the last few days, I've just been watching every film that has been shown on TV to pass the time. At uni, we don't have digital TV so we're stuck with the 4 main British channels (BBC1, BBC2, ITV and Channel 4) which means that the only decent films are being shown on Channel 4 (the others suck and channel 5 doesn't work).... so not exactly spoilt for choice but 'Eternal Sunshine of the spotless mind' was on earlier so I decided to give it a go.

It was okay. I liked it but overall I really don't understand all of the hype that surrounds the film. Maybe I wasn't watching it properly, I do that a lot with films and when I watch them again and concentrate, I love them. It was a cute story and a great idea that was portrayed well (it could easily have turned out tacky) and Kate Winslet was as awesome as ever .... even Jim Carrey whom I usually loathe was on top form. I'm just not sure I understood it and some parts of it just seemed too silly for me like the childhood scenes. I will give it another go though because it did show a glimmer of hope.

Now I'm waiting for 'Memento' to load because everyone I meet goes on about how amazing it is so I think its only fair that I try it out.

Ah and for those that asked about how it went with The Lord of the Rings boxset that I bought - I couldn't finish it. I watched the first one and got seriously annoyed at how long it was (I had like 4 breaks during it). Then I watched the second the next day, thought it was marginally better but got equally as annoyed with it and decided that I don't give a crap what happens to Frodo and co and definitely won't be watching the third. I'll give them to my Dad when I go home but I'm pretty sure he will be the same as me. I am SO glad I didn't follow the crowd and go to the cinema to see them when they came out, I couldn't have handled it - really. In my opinion, they are the most overrated films of all time O.o How can people watch them over and over?

Its cool yo'.

Pebline added this photo on Vox today and it made the front page. I think it captures the feel of Britain at the moment perfectly. I love it.

We've run out of grit and there is a lot more snow left to come - total lolz will ensue.
